Gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday attacked the family residence of the senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, in Obeiba-Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the assailants, numbering about three and armed with guns and cutlasses, stormed the premises around 1am, damaging parts of the building, including windows.

The senator’s Chief Security Officer, Yakubu Ovanja, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers fled after security operatives from Okehi responded to a distress call.

Although no arrests have been made, security sources said the matter has been documented and investigations are ongoing.

Confirming the attack, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said the gunmen might have targeted the house thinking she was in town.

“Two days ago, my younger brother took some contractors to my hometown in Ihima to inspect locations for new projects I attracted to my senatorial district,” she said.

“The unknown gunmen assumed I was the one in town and that night, attacked my family’s house. They were chased off by the civil defence team and community members who trooped out en masse. A report was made at the police area command. Nobody was hurt.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan was recently suspended by the Senate for alleged gross misconduct after a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Neda Imaseun, had recommended her suspension for allegedly violating Senate rules.
