Gunmen Invade Kebbi Church, Abduct Worshippers During Service

Panic gripped the residents of Zagami village in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Sunday as suspected members of the notorious Lakurawa gang stormed a church, abducting several worshippers during a service.

The attackers, said to have arrived on motorcycles, invaded the church while the morning worship was ongoing, shooting sporadically to cause confusion before whisking away an undisclosed number of congregants into a nearby forest.

An eyewitness, Mr. Ezekiel Danjuma, who narrowly escaped the attack, recounted the harrowing experience to The Punch.
    “It was terrifying.

They came shooting and forced their way into the church. Some of us managed to escape through the back, but they took many people with them,” he said.

Zagami, a quiet agrarian community in the Kebbi South Senatorial District, has been thrown into mourning following the incident.

The district, which comprises seven local government areas — Danko/Wasagu, Fakai, Ngaski, Sakaba, Shanga, Yauri, and Zuru — has witnessed increasing security concerns in recent times.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kebbi State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack. Efforts to reach police authorities for comments proved abortive.

Meanwhile, residents have called on the state government and security agencies to act swiftly in rescuing the abducted worshippers and to beef up security across vulnerable communities to forestall further attacks.
