A young woman was on Wednesday shot dead by gunmen who ambushed the convoy of former Minister of Labour and ex-Anambra State governor, Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Ngige, who confirmed the incident through his former spokesperson, Fred Chukwuelobe, was not in the convoy when the heavily armed attackers struck.
According to Chukwuelobe, the gunmen—who disguised in police and military uniforms—opened fire on the pilot vehicle, shooting a police officer and carting away his rifle and uniform.
“In the confusion, a lady who was recording the attack with her phone was fatally shot,” he said.
“Another victim, a shop owner who rushed out on hearing the gunshots, was also hit. He lost a lot of blood but doctors say he will recover.”
He added that the police escort commander who sustained gunshot injuries had been successfully operated on, while the shop owner would undergo a procedure to remove bullets lodged in his body.
“No policeman died in the incident. The escort leader is already stable. The shop owner was lucky because the bullets did not touch his spine,” Chukwuelobe clarified.
Ngige reportedly commiserated with the family of the young woman who died while filming the scene. He assured that all injured persons would receive full medical support.
The Anambra Police Command, through its spokesperson Ikenga Tochukwu, earlier confirmed the attack and announced the recovery of a white Mercedes-Benz SUV allegedly snatched by the attackers during the operation.
Security incidents involving high-profile political figures have been recurrent in parts of Anambra, with Wednesday’s attack heightening fears among residents and commuters along the Nkpor–Nnobi axis.
Police authorities say investigation is ongoing and efforts are underway to track down the assailants.
