There was pandemonium at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) after gunmen stormed the facility to kill a physiotherapist identified as Alex in a suspected cult-related attack.
Sources said the gunmen shot the health personnel while on duty within the department of physiotherapy of the hospital on Friday.
According to one of the sources, the attack threw patients and staff into panic as they scampered for safety.
In response, distraught health workers staged a protest within the hospital premises, wielding placards to decry the growing insecurity that has now spilt into health institutions.
UBTH public relations officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the incident, noting that the hospital had alerted security agencies and was awaiting investigation results.
“A physiotherapist with UBTH was shot dead on Friday. The matter has been reported to the security agencies,” he said.
Meanwhile, a separate tragedy occurred on Tuesday when an articulated truck crushed two vigilante members to death along the busy Ugbowo-Lagos Road directly in front of the University of Benin’s main gate.
Witnesses reported that the victims were riding on a motorbike when the truck ran over them at about noon, killing them instantly.
The heads of the victims were reportedly crushed beyond recognition.
“The two vigilantes died on the spot. Their remains have been deposited in a mortuary,” the witness said.
All efforts to get confirmation from the state police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, proved abortive as he neither answered his calls nor replied to text messages.

Veteran Juju musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, has debunked claims that he was abducted, describing the allegations as false and malicious.
The music icon’s daughter, Damilola Esther Adeniyi-Adegeye, had on Monday raised alarm via social media, alleging that her father was being held against his will by his stepson and manager, Dayo.
She further claimed the 77-year-old was being made to “work under duress” while his whereabouts remained unknown to other family members.
Reacting in an Instagram post on Monday, King Sunny Ade stated emphatically that he is “alive and well,” while dismissing the accusations as “falsehood and fabricated news” aimed at tarnishing his image.
“Contrary to the falsehood and fabricated news dated 28th April, 2025 peddled by Damilola Esther Adeniyi-Adegeye and her associates who declared that I was missing, I hereby state as follows: That I, Dr. Sunday Adeniyi-Adegeye MFR, also known as King Sunny Ade, am alive and well,” the statement read.
“It is very important to address the falsehood and fabricated news… and to assure the general public and loved ones that I am alive and safe. I am grateful for the love and support of my fans.”
The Juju maestro also issued a stern warning to bloggers and individuals spreading the claims, threatening legal action against those attempting to smear his reputation.
“Lastly, I utilize this medium to admonish the blogger(s) responsible for this mischievous act alongside those that take undue privileges to trample on my hard-earned reputation and image to desist forthwith; otherwise, be prepared to face the wrath of the law,” he added.
In a video shared on Facebook, Sunny Ade explained that he had been resting after performing at an event in Lekki, Lagos, and was therefore unreachable.
“My children, everyone wants to see me. It was during the time I took to rest that I wasn’t accessible, but glory to God, I’m here,” he said.
“I was not kidnapped. I’m thankful to my fans for the check-up, support, concern, and love. I’m on my way to a show now.”
The music legend’s clarification has since calmed concerns among fans and admirers, many of whom had expressed worry over the initial claims.
