A Renowned Harvard scholar and United Nations Representative on Migration and Sustainability, Nermin Ahmad (Ms), has been announced as one of the esteemed speakers at the 4th Journalists International Forum for Migration (JIFORM) Global Migration summit, set to take place in Toronto, Canada from October 2nd to 14th.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the hybrid event, with the theme “Climate Change, Human Mobility, and Sustainable Investment,” will gather participants from various sectors including the media, business community, migrant workers, immigration and judicial workers, government officials, and other related professionals.
JIFORM, a non-profit organization established in 2019, comprises over 300 journalists and volunteers from across the globe who cover migration matters.
The organization has previously facilitated events such as the inaugural African Migration Summit in partnership with the Nekotech Center of Excellence in Accra, Ghana in 2021, the West African Media Migration Summit in Togo in 2021, and an intercontinental migration summit in collaboration with Medgar Evers College, City University in Brooklyn, New York, from November 2nd to 4th, 2022.
The President of JIFORM,Dr. Ajibola Abayomi, confirmed Nermin’s participation, noting that she will be joining other distinguished speakers such as Gerry Weiner, the former Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, and Secretary of State of Canada, now the Executive Director of Global Relations, Partnerships, and Customer Satisfaction at APS Canada Startup Visas, and Dr. Princess Asie Kabuki Ocansey, a member of the African Union Labour Migration Advisory Committee, to examine global migration issues.
Nermin Ahmad holds an M.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, as well as an A.B. in Government from Harvard College.
“Additionally, she possesses a Certificate of Competence in Community Relations Practice from Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a Certificate in Human Rights Studies from Renée Cassin Institut Internationale des Droits de l’Homme in Strasbourg, France. At the summit, Nermin will deliver a presentation on “Diversity in Migrant Management and Economic Sustainability.”
“However, Gerry Weiner expressed his full support for the event and called on other organizations to encourage journalists and migration institutions to brainstorm and propose solutions to global migration challenges.
“He also urged developed countries to learn from Canada’s friendly migration policies in order to bolster the world economy.
“Her Excellency Rev. Dr. A.K. Ocansey on the other side is an internationally bestselling author and Chairperson of the United Nations Youth Association-Ghana and the End Deadly Work Coalition-USA who will also be present at the summit.
“Ocansey is the Executive Chairperson of the Nekotech Center of Excellence and Founder of the Nekotech Center for Labour Migration Diplomacy, which advises and supports African leaders and governments on labor migration policy and the implementation of excellent Decent Work programs to combat African youth unemployment by connecting them with vetted international employers.
“As a former member of the Ghana Constitution Consultative Assembly, she attended Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast and Rutgers University – College of Engineering, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Ceramic Engineering.
“She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Packaging Science and Engineering, specializing in Plastics Engineering, as well as a graduate certificate in International Trade and Finance from NYU, New York.
“She obtained her doctorate in Divinity from CICA, Canada.
“Therefore, Prominent dignitaries, including Professor Byron Price from the Medgars Evers College, City University of New York, USA, Philomena Gnanapragasam, Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), and Ms. Phelisa Nkomo from South Africa, are expected to participate in the program.
“Invitations have also been extended to the United Nations Non-Governmental Organization, First Fridays Toronto, and the Canada-Africa Chamber of Business.
