In a significant legal development, a 40-year-old herdsman named Muhammed Abubakar was presented before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos by the police, accused of stealing a total of 377 cows.
Abubakar, whose current address remains unknown, is now confronting a two-count charge of felony and theft.
Despite the allegations, Abubakar entered a plea of not guilty during the court proceedings.
According to the prosecutor, ASP Clément Okuoimose, the defendant is alleged to have committed these crimes on January 10th at approximately 10 a.m. in Apa Town, Badagry, Lagos State.
Okuoimose explained that Abubakar purportedly conspired with others to commit the felony of stealing, with a total of 377 cows being involved.
The stolen cattle were reported to belong to two complainants. Chief James Azonadu lost 125 cows, while Chief Towowede Hoteyin lost 252 cows.
Abubakar, a Fulani herdsman known for tending to cows for the town’s residents, allegedly chose to sell all the cattle entrusted to his care before absconding.
Following his apprehension, Abubakar was handed over to the police for prosecution. The charges against him are in violation of sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos 2015.
Chief Magistrate Mr. Fadahunsi Adefioye granted the defendant bail in the amount of N1,000,000, requiring two sureties of equal value.
One of these sureties must be a recognized Hausa leader in Lagos, while the other must be a religious leader in the city. The case is scheduled for mention on October 12th.
