Hisbah Arrests Youths For Not Fasting In Kano

The Kano State Hisbah Board has made several arrests of young men accused of failing to observe the fast Ina bid to enforce Sharia law during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to officials from the Hisbah Board, the arrests were conducted on the first day of Ramadan, which commenced on March 1, 2025.

Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, the Deputy Commander General of the Board, confirmed these arrests, emphasizing the agency’s mandate to ensure compliance with Sharia law during Ramadan.

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Abubakar reiterated the necessity of observing the fast as prescribed by Islamic teachings.

This recent crackdown by the Hisbah Board is part of a broader effort to enforce moral conduct and adherence to Islamic practices among residents of Kano State.

In addition to the arrests for not fasting, the board has also taken action against individuals with “indecent haircuts,” considering such styles contrary to Islamic standards and local traditions.

Furthermore, the Hisbah operatives have apprehended commercial tricycle (Keke Napep) riders who allegedly allowed the mixing of male and female passengers in violation of Islamic guidelines regarding gender segregation in public spaces.

This isn’t the first time the Hisbah Board has exercised its authority during Ramadan. Last year, similar incidents occurred when the board’s Department of Public Enlightenment arrested eleven Muslims for eating during fasting hours.

Lawal Fagge, a spokesman for the Hisbah Board, confirmed these arrests, noting that those detained had been released after pledging not to repeat the offense.

“We don’t arrest non-Muslims because this doesn’t concern them,” emphasized Fagge, highlighting the board’s focus on ensuring compliance primarily among Muslim residents.

He clarified that non-Muslims are exempt from such regulations unless they are found to be preparing or selling food intended for fasting Muslims.
