The Kano State Hisbah Board has cancelled the controversial, court-ordered marriage between two popular social media influencers, Ashiru Idris, better known as Mai Wushirya, and Basira Yar Guda Daya, citing lack of genuine consent from both parties.
The decision followed an earlier directive by a Magistrate Court ordering the Islamic morality police to facilitate the union within 60 days after the duo publicly expressed interest in marrying each other to avoid punishment for alleged indecent conduct on TikTok.
Confirming the cancellation in an audio message shared with journalists on Friday, the Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah, Dr Mujahedeen Aminuddeen Abubakar, said the board halted all preparations after discovering that both individuals were never truly in love.
“Our investigation revealed that their claim of love was made out of fear of punishment and not genuine affection,” Abubakar stated. “They both later admitted that their earlier confession was only to avoid the court’s sanction for their public display of affection online.”
He added that medical and counselling sessions conducted as part of the marriage process exposed serious disagreements and emotional detachment between the pair.
“They confirmed that the supposed romance was only a staged performance for social media content,” he said.”
Abubakar explained that Hisbah’s decision was based on Islamic principles that forbid forcing anyone into marriage, stressing that “any union without free consent is invalid in Islam.”
The deputy commander said the board had referred the matter back to the court for further legal action, noting that Hisbah’s role was limited to ensuring moral order and not enforcing marriages against the will of individuals.
The proposed marriage had earlier sparked outrage on social media, especially after Mai Wushirya claimed in a viral video that he was being coerced into the arrangement.
The development has reignited debate over the scope of Hisbah’s authority and the intersection of religion, law, and individual rights in Northern Nigeria.
