There was tension in parts of Katsina State after officials of the state Hisbah Commission reportedly shaved the hair of several young men during a recent enforcement exercise.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred in Sabuwa Local Government Area, where operatives of the Islamic police carried out the action as part of activities marking the just-concluded Sallah celebrations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Hisbah Commission said the operation, codenamed “Operation Happy Sallah,” was conducted across various parts of the town to ensure orderliness during the festivities.
The exercise was led by the Sabuwa Divisional Commander, Malam Idris Hayatu, who said the initiative was aimed at curbing what he described as inappropriate conduct among youths.
According to the statement, the operatives targeted behaviours considered inconsistent with societal and religious values, including certain hairstyles, public disturbances and activities that attract large crowds.
“The operation took place in different parts of Sabuwa town, focusing on addressing inappropriate behaviour and maintaining peace during the Eid celebration,” the statement read.
Hayatu stressed the commission’s commitment to enforcing moral standards and maintaining public order, particularly during festive periods.
He also urged residents, especially young people, to exhibit good conduct and avoid actions capable of disrupting communal harmony.
However, the development has sparked mixed reactions among residents, with some questioning the legality and human rights implications of forcibly shaving individuals’ hair, while others defended the move as part of efforts to uphold cultural and religious norms.
Efforts to get reactions from affected youths were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
