The House on The Rock Church has faulted the Nigeria Police over the detention of its Senior Pastor, Paul Adefarasin, and the description of a self-defense device found in his possession as “illegal.”
This comes after the clergyman was reportedly held for several hours by the police on Tuesday in connection with a viral video that showed him pointing a device at a car spotter, whom he later described as an “aggressive content creator.”
In a statement released on Wednesday, the church criticised the police for what it called an “inaccurate and misleading” classification of the device, stating that Adefarasin was released without charge and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
The statement reads in part:“Pastor Paul was detained for several hours and released without charge. During that time, an official police tweet mis-labelled his strobe-light stinger—also known as a stun gun—as ‘prohibited anti-riot equipment.’ Leading Nigerian lawyers advise that this description is incorrect in law.”
The church condemned the police’s handling of the matter and urged security operatives to approach such investigations with professionalism and courtesy.
The controversy stems from a viral clip showing Adefarasin confronting a man recording his vehicle.
The pastor could be seen pointing the object at the individual, leading to widespread speculation that it was a firearm.
Adefarasin has since denied that claim, insisting it was a non-lethal device meant for personal protection.
The church maintained that the object in question was a legal self-defense tool, not a prohibited weapon as alleged.
“Pastor Paul continues to cooperate fully with the police investigation and is confident that, once the facts are reviewed, he will be exonerated of the allegation arising from the viral video,” the church added.
The incident has sparked public debate over the use of self-defense devices in Nigeria and raised questions about police procedures in high-profile cases.
