Ghumdia Kambu Daniel, a 24-year-old Nigerian, vividly recalls the harrowing night in 2014 when Boko Haram militants invaded his family’s home in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Armed with rifles and machetes, the terrorists mercilessly slaughtered Ghumdia’s father and nearly claimed the lives of his two brothers.
Having witnessed such unspeakable violence, Ghumdia, alongside 29 other trauma survivors, recently participated in a four-day trauma healing workshop in Yola, Adamawa State.
Organized by Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria (CSWN), the workshop aimed to provide solace and guidance to those grappling with the aftermath of terrorist attacks.
During the workshop, participants underwent six core trauma healing lessons, facilitated by Rev. Yunusa Nmadu and his team.
These sessions served as a catalyst for the healing process, offering insights into forgiveness and the time required for emotional recovery.
Ghumdia shared his account at the “Trauma Healing Adamawa” workshop, revealing the profound impact of his family’s tragedy.
“At about 7:30 pm on the ill-fated day in Maiduguri, every family member was back home. All were in the living room, except Dad, who was relaxing outside in the veranda area,”
Ghumdia recounted. “Armed terrorists barged into our compound, forced everybody out, and handcuffed every male.”
The militants callously murdered Ghumdia’s father and inflicted grievous injuries on his brothers before plundering their home.
Despite the trauma inflicted upon his family, Ghumdia’s resilience shines through as he speaks of their struggles and eventual relocation to a semi-urban area.
Ghumdia’s story is not unique among workshop participants. Yohanna Waziri, Rose Uriah, and Samuel Edward each shared their own tales of loss and resilience.
From surviving kidnappings to enduring the destruction of livelihoods, these individuals exemplify the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to heal and rebuild their lives.
While the scars of their past may linger, they are emboldened by newfound strength and a sense of community forged through shared experiences.
