How I Stopped NLC’s Planned Strike Seven Days After Tinubu’s Inauguration — Kokori

The former General Secretary of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Chief Frank Kokori has explained how he stopped the suspended two weeks strike, planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress, seven days after President Bola Tinubu was  Inaugurated.

Kokori, who is now an elder state man said this in an interview, describing the planned strike as totally unnecessary.

He said that  he had to intervene in the unnecessary call to strike, adding that it might affect the new administration.

” Call for the strike was actually unnecessary, barely seven days after a new government’s coming into office, and Congress had to be convinced of the need to go back to the negotiation table”, he said.

According to him, for the first time in Nigeria, an actor, Bola Tinubu, who participated in the struggle to make Nigeria great is now the president.

He said, “for the first time, a man who understands the struggle is now the President and will naturally appreciate those of us who made all those sacrifices, for which we were frustrated at the end of the day.

“I think I personally was the arrowhead of that struggle: because I controlled the oil workers. Even the central labour organisation betrayed NUPENG and PENGASSAN, so, we had to take the brunt of the struggle.”

He therefore applauded Tinubu for the steps that have been taken, so far he has reached government.

He then prayed for him, adding that it shows he ( Tinubu ) means business to change the face of the country.

“I think Tinubu has started the process. And he has started well. If you see him meeting PDP, meeting Labour Party, meeting the governors’ forums and all other stakeholders, I think he means business and he will do well. He has already started well.

“I pray he continues. And I pray that the Almighty God sustains him with good health because as one gets older, there are bound to be some underlining I health problems which are natural to life. There is nothing I new about it. But we are even surprised that he has done very well in these past two weeks”, he said.
