A native doctor, Obi Obieze, popularly known as Obu Onyeka, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the abduction and attempted ritual killing of a 13-year-old girl in Enugu State.
Obieze, a native of Umuojor village in the Isiagu community, Enugu State, was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force following the rescue of the teenage victim from a shrine allegedly linked to him.
According to reports, the young girl was abducted on Tuesday, May 27, while on her way to the farm with her father.
Three unidentified men were said to have attacked them and whisked the girl away to an unknown location.
Following a swift response and coordinated operation by the police, the victim was rescued from a shrine believed to be associated with the suspect.
Obieze, however, reportedly fled the scene before security operatives could apprehend him.
Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed in a statement that Obieze was apprehended by NIS operatives at the Gbaji checkpoint along the Badagry-Seme Road in Lagos while attempting to flee the country on a motorcycle.
“Acting on credible intelligence, officers of the NIS Lagos State Border Patrol Command apprehended Obieze at the Gbaji checkpoint while he attempted to escape through the land border,” Akinlabi stated.
She further revealed that the suspect was found in possession of a National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) enrolment slip, which confirmed his identity. During preliminary interrogation, Obieze reportedly confessed to the crime.
The NIS spokesperson added that the service was working closely with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a smooth handover of the suspect for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Akinlabi reiterated the commitment of the Immigration Service to national security and border control, noting that the agency would continue to support other law enforcement bodies in curbing cross-border crimes.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents of Isiagu community, who called on the authorities to ensure justice is served.
