A  middle-aged man identified as Sunday Odechukwu has been  accused of brutally assaulting his wife, Mrs. Augustina Odechukwu, with a machete, resulting in severe cuts to her body in Akure,Ondo State.

The 40-year-old victim, originally from Ebonyi State, recounted how her husband, a native of Anambra State, launched the attack on Sunday at their residence along Oda Road, Akure.

She revealed that their relationship had soured over the past year, with communication between them breaking down completely.

Additionally, she lamented that her husband had ceased providing for her and their children.

Despite her husband’s demands for them to vacate the house, Mrs. Odechukwu explained that she was unable to comply due to financial constraints.

She stressed that she and her husband had been legally married for over 14 years, and his sudden desire for them to leave came as a shock.

Describing the harrowing ordeal, Mrs. Odechukwu recounted how her husband began assaulting her at home, wielding a machete with the intent to kill. She managed to shield herself with her left hand, sustaining serious injuries to both arms.

Fleeing the house naked, she narrowly escaped further harm when a state commissioner intervened and disarmed her husband.

Following the intervention of the police, Mrs. Odechukwu was promptly rushed to the hospital for treatment, while her husband was apprehended.

Reacting to the incident, Olamide Falana, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Matters, expressed deep concern.

After visiting the victim in the hospital, Falana condemned the violence against women, emphasizing that the matter would be treated with the seriousness it deserved.
