Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Saturday made a reconciliatory appeal to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, seeking forgiveness over his past utterances while pledging renewed commitment to the security of the South-West.
Igboho, who visited the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, arrived to a rousing welcome by traditional rulers, chiefs, and hundreds of supporters.
The activist, who broke down in tears during the visit, openly admitted his past mistakes and tendered an apology to the revered monarch.
“I offended Kabiyesi in the past and I am here to seek forgiveness. Whoever I may have offended should please forgive me,” Igboho said.
“My priority remains the security of Yorubaland. Our people are being killed and we cannot continue like this. I want to use my strength and voice to champion Yoruba security. Kabiyesi, please help us make this possible.”
The activist also appealed to the Ooni to intervene in clearing his name from security watchlists and to facilitate the unfreezing of his bank accounts, insisting his struggles were borne out of a desire to protect the Yoruba people.
Igboho, who was arrested and detained in the Benin Republic in 2021, disclosed that he later realised the Ooni had played a vital role in negotiating his release despite his earlier public criticism of the monarch.
“I never knew Kabiyesi would honour me in this manner. I thank him for standing by me even when I had erred,” he added.
In their separate remarks, the Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Abdulmumini Orisagbemi, and the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi, praised Igboho’s humility and assured him of the support of Yoruba monarchs in his renewed commitment to regional security.
Responding, the Ooni of Ife urged the activist to embrace patience and humility, stressing that enduring leadership is built on those virtues.
“One thing I have learnt is that a patient and humble person will always triumph. When many of you abused me, I smiled because I understood,” the Ooni said. “I held several private meetings with former President Muhammadu Buhari concerning your case, and I thank God you are alive today.”
The monarch also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as the Omoluabi ethos in his leadership and assured Igboho of his fatherly support.
“You are my son, and I am not angry with you. You are a pride to the Yoruba race. Some advised me not to receive you, but I told them what you are doing is not for yourself alone. Let us put aside fights and unite for the progress of Yorubaland,” he declared.
