Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that he left the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

El-Rufai, who recently defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stated that the APC is currently in an unhealthy state, accusing those in control of ignoring the challenges facing the party.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, El-Rufai disclosed that he consulted with Buhari before finalizing his decision to leave.

“I left the APC with his full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision. I always involve and consult him on my matters,” he said.

The former governor also recalled how, during his tenure, he submitted the list of his commissioner-nominees to Buhari for screening to ensure none of them had previously insulted the former president.

When asked about having a political godfather, El-Rufai affirmed his reliance on consultations.

“I have people I consult on everything I do. My first godfather is Muhammadu Buhari. As for the others, I won’t mention them to avoid unnecessary pressure,” he stated.

El-Rufai also addressed his role in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that while he had no regrets, he was surprised by certain developments.

“I haven’t regretted it, but I have been taken by surprise. I supported Tinubu because Yoruba Muslim leaders from the South-West told me they were politically marginalized.

“Also, we had agreed that the presidency should be zoned to the South in 2023 for fairness, balance, and justice,” he said.
