The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has disclosed that he may soon formally join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing himself as being “in transition” politically.
Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff, made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme on Sunday.
When asked if he had embraced partisan politics, the minister said, “I’ve not transited yet. I’m in transition.” Pressed further on whether he would join the APC, he added, “Not yet, but I think I will. Definitely. The APC has given me the platform to present myself right from when I was CDS till date, so why not?”
The 58-year-old minister also pledged total loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, saying the administration deserved full support as it pursues its reform agenda.
“Mr President needs all support, totally. I’ll give him my full backing, whatever I can do to make sure he succeeds in his call of duty, including moving forward to a second term. I will give him my very best,” he said.
Musa, who served as the 18th Chief of Defence Staff from June 2023 until his retirement in October 2025, was sworn in as Defence Minister by President Tinubu on December 4, 2025.
His comments come amid a sustained wave of defections to the APC since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, a trend that gathered momentum throughout 2025 and into 2026.
Several serving governors have crossed from opposition parties to the ruling party, including Abba Yusuf of Kano (NNPP), Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Douye Diri of Bayelsa and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, all from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Most recently, Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, defected to the APC, raising the number of governors under the party’s control to 29.
The growing realignments, often blamed on internal crises within opposition parties, have intensified political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
