I Met Dead Bat On My Bed’, Edo Governor Okpebholo Recounts Spiritual Battle Behind Guber Victory
The newly inaugurated governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has described an intense spiritual battle he encountered on his journey to winning the state’s governorship election in September.
During a Thanksgiving Service held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Okpebholo shared his experience, crediting his victory to divine intervention, consistent prayers, and the unwavering support of the Edo people.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his chief press secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo disclosed that he faced significant challenges and opposition during his campaign.
The governor, visibly moved, narrated how his reliance on God proved crucial as he withstood various attacks, some of which, he suggested, were spiritual in nature.
“While I was praising God, they [opponents] were busy operating from television and social media,” Okpebholo told the audience, referencing the efforts of his rivals to undermine his campaign.
“But, I took the battle to God because I knew the secret,” he continued. “A few days before the election, they said I was crazy. But I was listening to the voice of God, and I won the battle.”
Okpebholo recounted an unusual incident on the morning after his electoral victory, which he saw as a divine sign of protection.
“I came to my room and found a bat, dead on my bed, without me shooting any arrow,” he revealed. “But the Spirit of God was there; the arrow of God, the hand of God delivered me.”
The governor further disclosed that he resisted seeking help from any native doctor, prophet, diviner, or shrine throughout his campaign, choosing instead to lean entirely on God.
He urged Nigerians to place their faith in God in times of trouble, assuring them that “with God, all things are possible.”
The Thanksgiving Service, organized to commemorate his victory, saw a large turnout of prominent political figures, clergymen, and artists.
Okpebholo, who ran under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, emerged victorious in the September 21 governorship election, securing 291,667 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) trailed with 22,763 votes.
