The University of Ibadan Linguistics first-class graduate, OLUWASOLA, in an interview with KOREDE BADMUS, recounts his journey to academic excellence, the challenges he faced, and how faith and hard work shaped his success.
May we get to know you?
My name is Oluwasola Ayeni, and I am a first-class graduate of Linguistics from the University of Ibadan.
What was your CGPA upon graduation?
I graduated with a CGPA of 3.60 on a 4.0 scale.
What was your childhood like, and how did your upbringing inspire you to pursue Linguistics?
I had a delightful childhood, growing up under the care of my parents, both of whom are well-educated and deeply passionate about education. My father, in particular, made countless sacrifices to ensure my siblings and I attended the best primary and secondary schools. Initially, my upbringing inspired me to pursue a career in law, as this was the prevailing expectation for students in the arts. However, after failing to meet the cutoff mark for Law, I was admitted to study Linguistics. During my first year, I discovered a deep passion for the field and decided to abandon plans to transfer to Law in my second year.
Who has been your biggest cheerleader throughout your academic journey, and how did their support impact your success?
My mother has been my biggest cheerleader. She maintained a daily ritual of calling me to check on my well-being and motivate me. She recognized my potential even when it was unrefined. Both my parents invested heavily in my academic journey, and their unwavering belief in me fueled my determination to excel and make them proud.
Were there moments you doubted your ability to achieve a first-class degree? How did you push through those struggles?
Yes, there were challenging moments. One memorable instance was in my first year when a lecturer misplaced my submitted assignment and awarded me a zero for the continuous assessment. Despite presenting evidence of submission, the zero stood. I prayed earnestly to God to help me graduate successfully, even if it was with a second-class upper. With divine support and encouragement from friends, I persevered. A friend empathized with my situation and offered words of encouragement, which helped me regain my confidence.
How did your friends influence your academic journey?
My friends were instrumental in my success. From brainstorming sessions to surprise visits with food and gifts, their support kept me motivated. Friends like Tosin, Olayinka, Ifeoluwa, Ayọ̀fẹ́, Tomisin, and Isreal reminded me of the power of community and camaraderie.
What was your toughest moment at the University of Ibadan?
One of my toughest moments was during my second year when my father retired, and my family faced financial difficulties. I had to cater for my feeding and other expenses while maintaining academic focus. It was challenging, but with strategic planning, hard work, and unwavering faith, I persevered.
How did your lecturers or mentors contribute to your success?
My lecturers and mentors were invaluable. They were always patient and willing to provide guidance. Lecturers like Dr. Odoje and Dr. Demola connected me with internship and research opportunities, significantly contributing to my professional growth.
What does achieving a first-class degree mean to you?
It means a great deal. Having struggled with low self-esteem, this accomplishment reminds me that success is attainable. It has also given me the confidence to inspire others and encourage parents to believe in their children’s potential.
If you could go back to speak to your younger self at the beginning of this journey, what advice would you give him?
I would tell him to remain steadfast, focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, and not let negative comments deter him. A resolute spirit cannot be stopped by external doubts.
What is your next plan after this great achievement?
I plan to further my studies, engage in impactful research, and mentor aspiring academics.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey or experiences?
My experiences have taught me never to underestimate anyone based on their current performance. I advocate for nurturing potential in individuals by allowing them to pursue their passions. Parents should provide the necessary support and encouragement to help their children thrive.
