At a time when many undergraduates struggle with distractions and academic pressure, 22-year-old Favour Ayomide Oguntuase stood out, emerging as the Overall Best Graduating Student in the Department of English and Literary Studies, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, with a CGPA of 4.57.
In this interview with KOREDE BADMUS, she speaks about discipline, faith, entrepreneurship, and the unconventional routines that helped her succeed.
Can we meet you?
My name is Favour Ayomide Oguntuase. I graduated from FUOYE in 2025. Beyond academics, I run a small-scale food brand called Delicia Cravings, where I make and sell small chops. I also enjoy sewing and designing clothes.
You graduated as the overall best student in your department.
How did you feel when you received the news?
I was really surprised and very grateful to God because I didn’t expect it. It was a great feeling, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to have done well.
What was your final CGPA, and when did you realise a first-class was possible?
My final CGPA is 4.57. I had a first-class from my first semester, though it dropped a bit later. But I knew it was still possible, so I kept working towards it.
Why did you choose English and Literary Studies? Did your perception change over time?
My uncle recommended the course. Initially, I wanted to switch to Law, but the department was already full. At first, I found English boring, but by 300 level, I began to enjoy it more, especially when I understood its benefits.
What key habits helped you maintain academic excellence?
Before studying, I listened to music and browsed topics online. I downloaded relevant materials and screenshots for easy reference. I prioritised sleep, rewarded myself with movies after studying, and prayed before and after reading. That routine kept me focused.
Many students struggle with balancing academics and personal life. How did you cope?
Honestly, I struggled too. I planned my day, though unexpected things came up sometimes. I adjusted and used my free time wisely. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked.
Was there any lecturer or course that shaped your growth?
Yes, Stylistics with Dr Onanuga stood out. His enthusiasm made the course interesting, even though it was challenging.
What was your most difficult academic moment?
In 200 level, I registered for an exam that kept clashing with lectures and tests. It was tough, but I trusted God, caught up with lectures and wrote makeup tests.
Did you experience burnout or pressure?
Yes, especially when I started my business. My dad wanted my grades to remain high, so I had to set boundaries and prioritise properly. I kept telling myself I could do it.
How important were note-taking and class participation?
Very important. I enjoyed participating in class because it helped me understand the lecturer’s perspective. Taking notes also helped me remember key points.
Were you involved in extracurricular activities?
No, not really, due to personal reasons.
Looking back, what would you have done differently?
I wish I had socialised and networked more. It could have opened more opportunities.
What study techniques worked best for you?
Group discussions and studying past questions helped me a lot.
What separates a first-class student from an average student?
It’s about reading smart, not just spending long hours. Applying what you’ve learned effectively in exams makes the difference.
Advice for 100-level students who feel overwhelmed?
Don’t be overwhelmed. Trust God’s plan and take it one step at a time.
Advice for final-year students aiming for a first-class?
Everyone’s journey is different. Focus on what you can do now and give it your best.
Beyond grades, what values contributed to your success?
Faith and discipline.
What message do you have for students who believe excellence is out of reach?
Don’t give up. If it’s God’s will, you can achieve it. Keep pushing and stay focused.
