Former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, has disclosed a controversial attempt to forge a friendship with the late civil rights lawyer and activist, Gani Fawehinmi.
Despite employing all possible means during his tenure, Babangida acknowledged that his efforts were in vain, as revealed in a Channels Television interview yesterday.
Fawehinmi, recognized as a legal luminary and a revered Nigerian social activist, became one of the most vocal critics of Babangida’s government, leading to his detention 17 times by the administration that lasted until 1993.
Babangida, reflecting on his attempts, expressed regret at the unsuccessful pursuit of friendship.
He noted that even a mutual friend, Mr. Alex Akinyele, a former minister in his cabinet, also tried unsuccessfully to facilitate a connection.
The former Head of State revealed that Fawehinmi’s critical stance influenced the formulation of his policies.
Babangida would consistently inquire about the anticipated reaction from Fawehinmi, emphasising the activist’s significant impact on his decision-making process.
Fawehinmi, renowned for his unwavering commitment to social responsibility and providing free legal services to numerous clients, stood as a symbol of resistance against perceived governmental injustice.
Babangida described Fawehinmi as a “good critic” who hesitated to associate with someone already perceived as an “evil genius.”
Despite the disparity in their perspectives, Babangida expressed a genuine desire to befriend Fawehinmi, given his appreciation for intellectual minds.
Acknowledging Fawehinmi’s friendship with the late Alex Akinyele, Babangida revealed that concerted efforts were made to establish camaraderie, but they ultimately fell short.
The former Head of State shared that Fawehinmi’s insights were valued, and the attempt to make him a friend was driven by admiration for bright minds.
He concluded by underlining the interest of his administration in Nigeria’s betterment, encouraging members of his cabinet to join with the assurance that it served the nation’s interests.
