The wife of Oluwo of Iwoland, Osun state, Firdaus Akanbi has said that she was scared to marry Oba Abulrosheed Adewale Akanbi due to their culture difference.
Firdaus, a 28-year-old mother of one studied Business Management at Modern University of Science and Technology Cairo, Egypt said before she got married to Oba Abulrosheed Akanbi, she had a scary thought about marrying a yoruba monarch.
She explained that the fear was due to obvious difference in the culture of her husband compared to the one she was used to.
Firdaus is from the family of Bayero in Kano whose dad, Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Sani Yola, was Madakin Kano while he was alive and her grandfather, Dr Ado Bayero, reigned as Emir of Kano where she grew up .
She said “To say the truth, at first, I was scared because I did not know the culture or anything about Yoruba land before my Marriage to Oba Akanbi. But gradually, I am beginning to understand that Yoruba people are very accommodating, nice and pleasant people. So I got no reason to be scared again, rather I felt at home being here; everything is just normal.”
She confirmed that in the last one year of living in Yoruba land, there is no difference from being in Kano State. She said that she admires the people, their culture and tradition of Iwoland .
“There are a lot that I really appreciate in Yoruba land. I love the people, their culture and tradition. Being here is not different from being in Kano State.”
She said that she finds it easy to manage affairs of many elderly women and other queens.
She said “It is not difficult. People accord me my due respect and I treat people with respect too. It just that I have to understand the people and know how to relate with them and accommodate them because our culture differ a bit. I am trying my utmost best to adapt to Yoruba culture.”
