The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has uncovered massive fraud in a hospital project, revealing that full payments were made multiple times without any construction taking place.
The ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu, disclosed this at a recent event, stating that certain government officials ensured that the project was paid for five times without a single hospital being built.
“There was a case of a hospital which was paid for 100 per cent, five times. Yet, there was nothing to show for it. That tells you how bad the problem of corruption has become. We cannot continue like this,” Aliyu said.
Investigations revealed that despite the multiple payments, there was no sign of the hospital project commencing anywhere in the country. The ICPC, however, has traced the suspects involved and is working towards recovering the misappropriated funds.
While the commission did not confirm whether the culprits are being prosecuted, findings suggest that the primary focus is on retrieving the looted public funds.
Dr. Aliyu emphasized that the fraudulent hospital project is just one of many cases highlighting the extent of corruption in Nigeria. He called on the media and well-meaning Nigerians to join the fight against corruption, warning that if left unchecked, it could destroy the nation’s economy.
“All of us should join hands to tackle corruption in this country. Fighting corruption is not easy because when you fight corruption, corruption fights back. Those involved are united in their evil and attempt to discredit our work. But as a nation, we must fight back. If we don’t, our children will have no future,” he added.
