A woman displaced by the ongoing violence in Benue State has given birth to a set of quadruplets under harrowing conditions.
The woman, identified as Shidoo Tortiv from Ucha village in Gwer West Local Government Area, was forced to flee her home with her husband, Wilfred Tortiv, due to persistent insecurity.
The couple has since been squatting with relatives in Kula, a neighbouring community within the same local council.
Narrating the incident to PLATFORM TIMES on Monday, the father said his wife delivered the babies at home around 6pm on Saturday, with the assistance of local midwives.
He noted that the family was not living in any official Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at the time.
“There was no time to get to the hospital because she went into labour and delivered within an hour. Besides, we did not have the means to pay for hospital bills,” Tortiv explained over the phone.
He revealed that the birth marked his wife’s third delivery. Their first two children are boys, and the quadruplets — two boys and two girls — have significantly increased the family’s burden.
Tortiv further stated that shortly after the delivery, Governor Hyacinth Alia ordered the immediate transfer of his wife and the newborns to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, for proper medical attention.
“We’re at the teaching hospital now. My wife and the babies are doing fine,” the relieved father said, while appealing for support from the public. “Since our displacement from home, we can’t even go to farm. So we will need help to cater for the children.”
Confirming the development, Chairman of Gwer West Local Government, Victor Ormin, said in a WhatsApp message said “I brought them down to Makurdi yesterday (Sunday) based on the directives of the Governor. She’s currently receiving care at the Teaching Hospital.”
The remarkable birth comes amid heightened humanitarian challenges facing displaced persons across the state.
