Ijebu-Ode LG Chairman Debunks 75-Day Market Closure Rumour

The Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that all markets in the council area have been ordered to shut down for 75 days following the death of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

Alebiosu, in a personally signed statement issued on Thursday, described the claim as “false and baseless,” urging traders, market leaders, and the general public to disregard the rumour.

He stated that no such directive emanated from his office or any competent authority, stressing that economic activities across the local government remain unhindered.

“The attention of the Ijebu-Ode Local Government has been drawn to a false and misleading rumour currently circulating regarding the purported closure of all markets in the area for a duration of 75 days,” the statement read.

“We wish to categorically state that there is no such directive or decision by the local government or any competent authority. The general public, market leaders, and traders are hereby urged to disregard this baseless information and continue their lawful activities.”

The LG chairman assured residents that any official directives concerning market operations, if necessary, would be communicated through verified government channels.

Alebiosu also cautioned against the spread of unverified information, which he said could incite panic or disrupt public order.

The reaction follows the recent passage of Oba Adetona, who reigned as the Awujale of Ijebuland for over six decades. His death has sparked several reports and activities across the region, some of which have stirred misinformation online.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that while traditional mourning rites are being observed across Ijebuland, no formal pronouncement has been made mandating a shutdown of markets.
