Tension is mounting in Lagos as women from the Ilaje community have threatened to stage a naked protest over the alleged demolition of their ancestral homes by individuals they described as “land grabbers” backed by some traditional rulers in the state.
Hundreds of residents under the umbrella of Egbe Omo Ilaje stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday, demanding urgent intervention from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
The protesters, many of them elderly women, accused some monarchs of orchestrating the demolition of Ilaje communities under false claims of acting on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
One of the protesters, who identified herself as Ifagbemi, warned that the women were prepared to storm the palaces of the monarchs involved in the crisis unclad if government failed to intervene.
She said, “We are the original settlers of Lagos. Our ancestors moved from Ilaje to Ebute-Ero, formerly known as Olobun. If the government ignores us, we will strip ourselves and storm the palaces of these monarchs. We want peace and justice.”
The President-General of Egbe Omo Ilaje Worldwide, Rafael Irowainu, alleged that some traditional rulers had abandoned their role as custodians of justice to engage in land grabbing.
