The recent protest staged by some youths in Ilara Kingdom, Epe Division of Lagos State, has stirred outrage across the community, with traditional and civic leaders describing the act as “sacrilegious, unprovoked, and anti-development.”
The demonstration, which took place on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, saw a group of youths — alleged to have been sponsored — marching through the streets of the ancient town, chanting inflammatory songs and accusing the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, of neglecting his traditional and community responsibilities.
Eyewitnesses told PLATFORM TIMES that the protesters went as far as placing mariwo (fresh palm fronds) at the palace gates — a ritual symbol traditionally reserved for the monarch — describing the act as a taboo and a desecration of Ilara’s customs.
Community elders and residents have condemned the incident, branding it an affront to the stool of the Alara and a deliberate attempt to sow discord in the town.
“This is a dark day in the history of our land,” said one elder who pleaded anonymity. “It is unthinkable that some misguided youths could allow themselves to be used by enemies of Ilara’s progress.”
Sources within the community allege that a rival traditional ruler, reportedly envious of Oba Ogunsanwo’s growing influence as Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Chiefs and Chairman of the Epe Division Traditional Rulers Council, may have orchestrated the protest to undermine his leadership.
“It would be futile to attempt to remove or discredit the Alara through such acts,” another elder added. “His leadership position is statutory, and his achievements speak for themselves.”
Since ascending the throne five years ago, Oba Ogunsanwo has been widely praised for his forward-looking leadership philosophy — AGAPE (Advancement Galvanized in an Atmosphere of Positive Engagement) — which emphasizes unity, education, and sustainable growth.
Under his reign, Ilara Kingdom has witnessed several developmental projects, including: award of local and international scholarships to indigent students; Construction of two blocks of six classrooms at Adesowon Secondary School and facilitation of the Ilara Model Primary School through partnership with the Rotary Club of Lagos.
Rehabilitation of local schools in collaboration with political and corporate stakeholders.
Residents say these efforts have transformed Ilara into one of the most progressive traditional communities in Lagos State.
The Epe Division People Assembly and Lagos Focus Foundation have thrown their weight behind the monarch, describing the protest as the handiwork of “a few jobless and politically motivated youths.”
In a joint statement titled “Vote of Confidence on the Alara of Ilara Kingdom and Support for Our Royal Father,” signed by Rt. Hon. Comrade Fagbodun Oluwadamilare, the groups reaffirmed their loyalty to the monarch.
“Ilara remains united behind Oba Ogunsanwo, whose reign has brought peace, progress, and partnerships from across Nigeria to our community,” the statement read.
Responding to the allegations, palace sources quoted Oba Ogunsanwo as dismissing claims of absenteeism and mismanagement of community land.
“I don’t know where they got that information from,” he said. “I have never been away for six months as they claim. I am always here, attending to the affairs of my people and pursuing development for Ilara.”
He explained that the 10-acre land allocated to the Nigerian Navy was given at no cost to support a community development project.
“Unfortunately, some individuals went behind to sell parts of the land without the palace’s approval,” the source added.
The monarch reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of Ilara, noting ongoing collaborations with the Lagos State Government for a new general hospital and other infrastructure projects.
In a gesture of peace, the Alara convened a reconciliation meeting with community members and the aggrieved youths. Palace insiders said the monarch had forgiven the offenders, describing their actions as a “moment of youthful misguidance.”
“I am not resting on my oars,” Oba Ogunsanwo was quoted as saying. “Ilara Kingdom will continue to grow in unity and prosperity through collective effort and mutual respect.”
As calm returns to the town, stakeholders have called on residents to remain vigilant and resist any attempt to disrupt the progress recorded under the monarch’s reign.
“Ilara is rising,” one community leader told PLATFORM TIMES. “And no amount of blackmail or incitement can stop its march toward greatness.”
