A 38-year-old officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Chidiebere James, has allegedly been stabbed to death by his wife in Abia State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday at Umuizi, Ekeoba Ohuhu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
The deceased, who was popularly known in the community as “Agali,” was said to have engaged in a heated argument with his wife a day before the tragic incident.
Residents told PLATFORM TIMES that the dispute began over their sick child and the officer’s alleged inability to provide funds for medical treatment.
The situation was further compounded by allegations of infidelity after the wife reportedly discovered incriminating messages on the deceased’s mobile phone.
Family members, including the deceased’s sister, were said to have intervened on Sunday and temporarily restored calm.
However, tensions reportedly resurfaced on Monday morning, leading to another confrontation inside their residence.
Sources said the altercation degenerated into a physical struggle during which the officer’s phone was damaged. In retaliation, he allegedly seized and destroyed his wife’s phone.
“The quarrel became violent and, in the process, she allegedly picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed him,” a community source, who requested anonymity, said.
The officer was said to have collapsed shortly after the incident and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where he was confirmed dead.
It was further gathered that the suspect allegedly attempted to flee the scene with the couple’s children but was prevented by youths in the area who reportedly gathered at the residence.
Some of the youths were said to have attempted to assault her before she was rescued.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while efforts to reach the Abia State Police Command for confirmation were ongoing.
The tragic development has thrown the community into mourning, with residents expressing shock over what they described as a preventable domestic dispute that spiralled into fatal violence.
