The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Mr. Quadri Ismail Adeyinka, a staff member of the Nigeria Immigration Service, for passport fraud.
Adeyinka was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Apo, Abuja.
The ICPC had charged Adeyinka with four counts, including gratification, conferment of corrupt advantage, and cheating, all of which violate provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and the Penal Code Act.
The conviction underscores the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat corruption within its institutions.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Dr. Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha, presented compelling evidence showing how Adeyinka defrauded Mr. Ovie Justice Ojeffia.
Adeyinka had solicited N100,000 from Ojeffia under the guise of regularising his passport.
However, after receiving the payment, Adeyinka failed to fulfil his promise, prompting Ojeffia to file a petition with the ICPC.
Following a thorough investigation, Adeyinka was arraigned in court where he faced the full weight of the law.
Justice Onwuegbuzie, in his ruling, found Adeyinka guilty on all four counts.
Adeyinka received seven years each for counts one and two, five years for count four, and two years for count three.
The sentences are set to run concurrently, which means that Adeyinka will serve a total of seven years in prison.
