The Imo State Police Command has arrested a Catholic priest, Joseph Enyinaya, for allegedly shooting and killing a young boy at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2024, during a church gathering, when the boy reportedly set off fireworks inside the church premises. The act led to an altercation that allegedly escalated to the fatal shooting.
Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo police, confirmed the priest’s arrest on Thursday. He said the police had launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“The priest has been arrested, and the body of the boy has been deposited at a mortuary in Atta Ikeduru,” Okoye said. “A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident.”
The victim’s remains have been transferred to the morgue in the neighboring Atta Ikeduru community for further processes.
Okoye assured residents of the state that the police would provide updates as the investigation progresses, emphasizing the command’s commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining public order.
The incident has sparked outrage within the local community, with many expressing shock over the turn of events. Church members and residents have called for a thorough investigation and accountability.
This development comes amidst growing concerns over firearm misuse and safety in religious institutions across the country.
