Clearing agents operating at the nation’s seaports have called on the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to increase the age limit of imported used vehicles, also known as tokunbo, to 15 years from the date of manufacture.
The Association of Nigerian Licenced Customs Agents said this in a congratulatory message sent to Tinubu on his electoral victory.
The ANLCA urged the new administration to reduce the 15% levy on used vehicles and to appoint a serving Customs Officer as Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
The ANLCA’s Acting President, Dr Kayode Farinto, who is also the Lagos State coordinator of the Progressives Solidarity for Asiwaju (PSA), a support group of Maritime stakeholders and allied industries in the sub-sector of Nigeria’s economy, expressed his confidence in the success of the Tinubu/Shettima presidency.
He emphasized that the maritime industry is now the revenue basket of Nigeria, aside from oil, and therefore urged the President-elect to give it the attention it deserves.
He suggested that Maritime professionals should be part of the think tank in the new government, either as agency heads or as board members.
He said that, ” the new Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) should be appointed from among the proper officers and not this aberration that has stagnated the growth of cargo clearance and Customs operations in Nigeria.”
Furthermore, Farinto called for the reduction of the 15% levy on used vehicles, as it would encourage more importers to bring in vehicles that are still in good condition.
He also urged the President-elect to appoint Special Advisers on Maritime and Customs Affairs to provide professional and technical advice that would help grow the industry and generate more revenue.
The ANLCA also called for the establishment of a Federal Ministry of Maritime Affairs to harness the potential of Nigeria’s Blue Economy project for increased revenue earnings and employment opportunities for the country’s youth.
They pledged its support to the new government in advancing the cause of the maritime industry, and urged all stakeholders to work together towards the development of the sector, as it has the potential to create employment opportunities for Nigeria’s youth and add value to the nation’s economy.
The association expressed its willingness to work with the new government to advance the maritime industry’s cause and urged all maritime stakeholders to support the APC Government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima to move the industry forward.
