The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has debunked the claim that one of its ad-hoc staff was killed during the 2023 Governorship and State Assembly in Ogun.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that an INEC supervisor in the Ogijo area of Sagamu local government, Emmanuel Adeniran died a few days after the elections.
The People’s Democratic Party governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu who visited the family alleged that the ad hoc staff was killed for refusing to rig during the March 18 elections in Ogun State.
Adebutu spoke at a meeting of the Conference of Political Parties for Good Governance in Ogun State, held in Abeokuta.
Adebutu described Adeniran who left behind his wife and three young children as an upright man.
His words, “one of the INEC officials in Ogijo refused to rig for APC in Ogijo because we kept on saying Ogijo will get a border community development agency. The man, an indigene of Ogijo refused to rig for them, they killed him, and APC killed him! all because of this election.
“The man refused to rig, so they killed him; a man with three young children. I went there, you need to see that widow and the three children. Luckily, the man was smart enough, a lot of those results have been uploaded, but he still paid with his life.”
The INEC media officer in Ogun, Dansu has debunked the claims that Adeniran’s death is linked with the election.
He said the Adeniran was at the state INEC headquarters the Sunday after the elections to submit the materials in his custody.
He added that the deceased who was said to be hypertensive was rushed to the hospital after which he was declared dead.
He affirmed that though there was an attack on Ogijo during the collation of results, Adeniran had no issue on election day.
“The family said he was hypertensive, he was not killed but he died. He still came to finish his job on Sunday after the election. His polling unit was attacked but he was not affected. They said he collapsed on Monday and was rushed to the hospital.”
