At exactly, 4:20am on Wednesday , the candidate of All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been declared winner of the Saturday February 25 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the declaration .
Announcing the result at the National Collation Center Yakubu said Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, aatiju Abubakar who scored 6,984,520
votes.
Yakubu also announced that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi garnered 6,101,533 while Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party polled 1,496,687.
“That Tinubu Bola Ahmed of the APC having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected”, the INEC chairman stated.
Yakubu said the result is from a collated figure of votes from all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
The trio of Tinubu, Obi, and Atiku won the elections in 12 states while Kwankwaso won one.
Tinubu won the elections in Rivers, Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo and Ogun states.
Atiku won in Katsina, Adamawa and Taraba, Osun, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa,
Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, and Bauchi states.
Obi won in Edo, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Federal Capital Territory Plateau, Imo, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Anambra, Abia and Enugu states.
Apart from scoring the constitutionally required majority votes, Tinubu also met the second requirement of 25 per cent of the votes in 25 states (two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states and Abuja)
Yakubu said Certificates of Return will be presented to the president-elect and Vice-President elect by 3pm today.
