Insecurity : Afenifere Begs Tinubu To Invoke Executive Order For State Police

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organization, Afenifere, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action against the escalating insecurity in Nigeria by invoking an Executive Order to establish state and local government police forces.

This appeal was made on Saturday through a statement issued by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, in Ibadan.

In addition to advocating  state and local police, Afenifere emphasized the necessity of installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and deploying modern technology, including drones, in strategic locations to bolster security efforts.

Ajayi highlighted the urgency of these measures in light of the recent surge in banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes across various states.

“There are indications that Tinubu is desirous of putting an end to this deleterious menace,” Ajayi stated.

He recalled that earlier this year, President Tinubu approved the procurement of digital tracking tools to enhance the apprehension of bandits, terrorists, and armed robbers.

Moreover, during the African Counter-Terrorism Summit on April 22, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving national security.

Despite these assurances, Ajayi expressed concern that recent developments have not demonstrated significant progress in achieving the President’s security objectives.

To address this, Afenifere urged Tinubu to promptly implement state and local government police forces through an Executive Order, even as the process of amending the constitution to accommodate these changes continues.

Ajayi stressed the importance of immediate action: “Close circuit television sets, deployment of modern technology for security purposes including drones must be effected immediately.”

He underscored that these measures are critical in combating the increasing threats posed by banditry and kidnapping.

The call for enhanced security measures was driven by alarming reports of criminal activities in states such as Ogun, Edo, Ekiti, Oyo, Kogi, Zamfara, and Niger.

These incidents have contributed to Nigeria being ranked among the top nations globally for kidnapping, according to a recent research organization’s findings.

Ajayi highlighted the persistent clashes between Fulani herders and farmers in Osun, Ondo, and Oyo States, with the latest victims located in Otu, Igbeti, and Alaga in the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State.
