The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared April 7 as National Police Day.
The vice president of the country, Kashim Shettima made this announcement on Monday night while speaking at the inaugural award and commendations ceremony held by the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.
The VP, while delivering a speech, on behalf of President Tinubu, titled “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” said the development was a way to show the government’s commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices and dedication of the police force.
In his words, the police is still maintaining security at a time when Nigeria’s security framework faces unprecedented challenges.
In the same vein, Shettima highlighted the resilience of Nigerian citizens in the face of ongoing security threats, attributing their perseverance to the unwavering commitment of the police.
He said, “At a time in Nigeria’s history when our nation’s security architecture is being stretched beyond elastic limits, it is the unwavering commitment of our police force that has allowed our citizens to endure despite severe threats to their lives and livelihoods.
“We are unequivocal about our resolve to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution that mirrors the aspirations and values of our nation.”
He therefore said as part of the government’s comprehensive reforms, significant investments are being made in training and capacity building.
He added that this initiative aims to equip police officers with the essential knowledge, skills, values, and expertise needed to address the complexities of modern policing effectively.
Also, he said that there will be an upgrade in equipment and technology to enhance the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the force.
