Residents of 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) spanning Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi States are currently grappling with the harsh realities of surviving in an environment besieged by kidnappings, cattle rustling, and banditry.
An investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reveals that inhabitants of these affected regions are left with difficult choices: migration, negotiation with criminals, or an existence riddled with uncertainty.
In Sokoto State, the impact of insecurity has hit hardest in LGAs such as Isa, Sabon Birni, Gwadabawa, Illela, Tangaza, and Goronyo.
Reports indicate that residents have been compelled to abandon their farms, leading to the abandonment of entire villages.
Malam Abubakar Bawa, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, confirmed the state’s acknowledgment of the crisis.
He emphasized the administration’s commitment to addressing security concerns as a top priority.
In Zamfara, Mr. Faruk Shehu, a civil society activist, expressed concern over the displacement of communities in the state’s 14 LGAs.
The LGAs most adversely affected include Maru, Anka, Shinkafi, Maradun, Zurmi, Gusau, and Bungudu. Previous attempts at dialogue with bandits proved futile, exacerbating security challenges.
In Kebbi, the situation has taken a grim toll, with Mr. Bamaiyi An’iko of the Zuru Development Foundation reporting at least 2,500 lives lost between 2019 and 2023.
The loss of lives and displacement of rural communities has affected areas under the Zuru Emirate, particularly in Danko, Wasagu, Fakai, Sakaba, and Zuru LGAs.
The plight of these communities has pushed some to reach agreements with the bandits, a dire measure to ensure their survival.
While relief efforts are underway for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the state governments and agencies are urged to remain steadfast in their support.
In addressing the crisis, Deputy Governor Sen. Umar Tafida assured citizens of the government’s determination to overcome security challenges and provide assistance to those displaced.
Community leader Alhaji Sani Umar-Jabbi emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach, focusing on community engagement and policy measures.
He highlighted the need to address population growth and its effects on resources, underscoring the importance of both attitude change and strategic planning to curtail the escalation of the crisis
