The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has raised fresh alarm over what he described as the growing infiltration of terrorists into several communities across the South-West.
Adams, who spoke during an interview with Central TV at his Lagos residence, said intelligence at his disposal points to “a clear and immediate danger” for the region.
According to him, recent violent developments in neighbouring Kogi and Kwara states show that armed groups are deliberately testing their capabilities in areas surrounding the South-West before launching coordinated attacks.
“We are at a point where the security situation in this country has become deeply troubling. Recent incidents across numerous states show clearly that Nigeria is facing a serious security threat,” Adams said.
He added that credible intelligence from his network indicated that terrorists had already gained access to many communities in Yorubaland.
“What they are doing in Kogi and Kwara is simply to test the terrain before launching major attacks. The intelligence we have shows that they are targeting Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and even Lagos State,” he warned.
When asked to identify the groups behind the alleged infiltration, the Yoruba generalissimo linked the threats to various armed factions operating in the northern part of the country.
“These are the same groups responsible for daily attacks in different parts of the country.
Sometimes they are labelled as bandits, sometimes as violent herdsmen. Beyond that, we know that international terrorist organisations such as ISIS, ISWAP and Boko Haram also operate in Nigeria,” he said.
Adams further alleged that foreign actors were involved in coordinating some of the activities of the armed elements.
“I can say authoritatively that some foreigners are coordinating this. It is not limited to Nigerians alone,” he claimed.
He attributed the rising attacks across the country to a mix of political, economic and ethnic motivations—factors he said continue to embolden violent groups.
Adams urged the Federal Government and security agencies to act decisively, insisting that silence or complacency could prove costly for the South-West region.
