Internet Fraud Driving Away Foreign Investors – EFCC Boss Warns

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has raised concern over the growing involvement of Nigerian youths in internet fraud, warning that the trend is tarnishing the nation’s global image and discouraging foreign investment.

Olukoyede, who spoke through the acting Zonal Director of the EFCC in Benin, Assistant Commander of the EFCC I, Effa Okim, at an event held at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, Delta State, described cybercrime as a major economic threat.

“The menace of internet fraud among our youth is pervasive and it is a stain on us as a people and as a nation. They have embraced this crime to the detriment of their future and the image of the nation,” he said.

According to him, the implications of internet fraud go beyond damaged reputations, adding that it leads to a loss of investor confidence, collapse of industries, stifled youth creativity, and significant harm to the economy.

He urged Nigerian youths to channel their creativity and resilience into productive ventures rather than criminal activities.

“Our youths are vibrant, forward-looking, resilient, creative, and intelligent, and can hold their own anywhere in the world,” Olukoyede stated.

The anti-graft agency has continued to ramp up awareness and enforcement efforts against cybercrime, which remains one of the top crimes being prosecuted in Nigeria.
