The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), announcing that the results of 39,834 candidates have been withheld for various reasons.
According to a statement released on Friday, the board disclosed that out of the 2,030,862 candidates who registered for the examination across 882 Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide, only 1,957,000 candidates were accredited for the exam.
A total of 71,705 candidates were absent, while the biometric data of 2,157 were rejected due to invalid fingerprints.
JAMB revealed that 1,911,551 results have been released as of May 9, while 1,426 are still under further scrutiny and processing.
In addition, 96 results were withheld over confirmed cases of malpractice—a slight drop from the 123 recorded in 2024.
Notably, 41,027 candidates registered under the board’s special consideration for exceptionally brilliant but underage candidates. Of these, 40,261 sat for the examination, but only 467 managed to score 320 and above, qualifying them for further academic opportunities.
The board said all qualified candidates under this category have been notified of their performance, while those who failed to meet the minimum requirement were informed of their ineligibility.
“Gifted candidates must demonstrate their ability through multiple assessments including UTME, SSCE, Post-UTME, and a gifted candidate test,” JAMB stated.
The policy on minimum entry age into tertiary institutions also featured prominently in JAMB’s release.
While the 16-year minimum age remains in effect, plans to increase it to 18 years from 2025 have been shelved by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
A recent analysis had revealed that 78.49 per cent of UTME candidates scored below 200, reinforcing concerns over declining performance levels in the nation’s educational system.
Candidates can access their results by texting “UTMERESULT” to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used during registration.
The board has urged the public to remain patient as investigations into the remaining withheld results continue.
