The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has uncovered a massive case of certificate fraud, revealing that 142 out of 148 A-level results submitted for Direct Entry admission at Bayero University, Kano, were fake.
In its latest weekly bulletin, JAMB disclosed that only six of the results presented to BUK were found to be genuine.
The board reaffirmed that one of its primary mandates is to ensure that only valid academic documents are used for university admissions in Nigeria.
To curb such fraudulent activities, JAMB established the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPEDS) two years ago, following concerns raised by Bayero University, Kano.
The university had reported that a significant number of applicants were submitting forged A-level certificates.
With the introduction of NIPEDS, JAMB has intensified its verification process, identifying a growing number of fraudulent academic documents, including those purportedly issued by foreign institutions.
In a recent audit, JAMB uncovered 13 additional fake A-level certificates submitted to other universities, some of which had already processed admissions based on these fraudulent documents.
The board has handed over individuals involved in the scandal to law enforcement agencies for prosecution, emphasizing that universities found admitting students with fake credentials will be considered complicit in academic fraud.
JAMB also highlighted a particularly concerning trend where some applicants forged Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) results from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, to gain admission into the same institution.
The board warned that institutions must intensify their verification procedures to prevent further breaches in the admission process.
