The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has exposed a staggering 3,000 fake graduates who had never stepped foot inside a classroom.
In a report published in the board’s bulletin, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, expressed grave concerns about the endemic corruption that has facilitated these fraudulent qualifications.
During a recent meeting with the leadership of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities, Oloyede lamented on the severity of the issue.
“Some ‘graduates’ had never entered the four walls of a university owing to the endemic corruption in the system, but the board had documented over 3,000 of such cases,” the bulletin quoted Oloyede as saying.
The prevalence of illegal admissions by some institutions has also been a source of national embarrassment.
This issue, Oloyede noted, has not only undermined the integrity of the country’s educational standards but has also discredited genuine efforts towards academic excellence.
In December 2023, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education mandated JAMB to present a comprehensive list of institutions involved in these illegal practices.
In response to the rising tide of illegal admissions, JAMB issued a stern warning to candidates, advising them to reject offers from institutions that bypass the proper academic channels.
In a statement titled, “Cessation of illegal/irregular admission,” JAMB reiterated that all admissions into first degree, national diploma, national innovation diploma, and Nigeria certificate in education programs must be processed exclusively through JAMB.
