A domestic dispute in Sokoto State took a violent turn after a housewife allegedly poured hot oil on her husband’s private organ over suspicions of infidelity.
The victim, Bello Abubakar, who resides in the Yar Gabas area of Sokoto metropolis, is currently receiving treatment at a Specialist Hospital following severe burns sustained in the attack.
Abubakar, who denied engaging in any extramarital affair, said the incident occurred shortly after he returned from the mosque where he had gone to observe the early morning Subhi prayer.
Recounting his ordeal, he explained that he met his wife in a distressed state upon returning home but said she declined to explain the cause of her emotional outburst.
“I returned home around 8 a.m. and met her crying. I asked what was wrong, but she refused to respond,” he said.
He added that he later prepared to leave for work after performing ablution and reciting the Qur’an when his wife asked him to wait.
“I was lying on the bed naked when she entered with a cup containing what I thought was melted butter. Whenever her condition relapses, she usually prays over water in a cup, so I didn’t suspect anything,” he said.
Abubakar said moments later, he felt a burning sensation.
“Suddenly, she poured the hot substance on my private part. I screamed in pain and realised my hand was also burnt,” he added.
The victim attributed his wife’s actions to what he described as a recurring “spiritual condition,” noting that she had been battling unspecified challenges in recent times.
A senior brother of the victim, Tasiu Abubakar, said the couple had lived peacefully prior to the incident but alleged that the wife’s mother had earlier opposed the marriage.
He suggested that external influence might have contributed to the attack.
Despite the severity of the incident, he disclosed that both families had opted for an out-of-court settlement and were making efforts to reconcile, adding that no formal complaint had been filed with law enforcement authorities.
Efforts to reach the wife and her relatives for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said he would verify the incident and provide further details, but had yet to respond as of press time.
The incident adds to growing concerns over rising cases of domestic violence, with stakeholders calling for increased awareness and intervention to prevent such occurrences.
