Jega Demands INEC Accountability For IReV Failure In 2023 Elections

Former INEC Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide an explanation regarding the malfunctioning INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems (BVAS) during the 2023 general elections.

In an interview with Channels Television over the weekend, Jega attributed the failure to desperate politicians allegedly infiltrating the technological systems designed for accreditation and electronic vote transmission.

During the February 2023 polls, public outcry arose as INEC officials struggled to electronically upload election results to the IReV as mandated by Section 60 of the Electoral Act 2022.

Opposition parties contested the manual collation of results, leading to legal challenges against the victory of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), declared winner of the presidential election.

Jega, acknowledging INEC’s efforts under challenging circumstances, pointed to the interference of reckless politicians who sought to exploit and bypass the introduced technology.

He emphasized the need for INEC to provide detailed insights into the IReV failure, advocating for a thorough public inquiry.

Jega asserted that, despite the confidence expressed by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, the IReV’s breakdown should be thoroughly examined once the court cases are resolved.

“In spite of the confidence and the very articulate manner the INEC chairman (Mahmood Yakubu) had spoken about the IReV and it then failed, I believe that some of our reckless politicians may have infiltrated it and truncated it but INEC will take the blame for that,” said Jega.
