Jigawa Delegates Disrupt Atiku, Obi Coalition Meeting Over Representation

A  coalition meeting involving key opposition political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, was temporarily disrupted on Sunday following a protest by delegates from Jigawa State over representation issues.

The high-level political parley, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel under the aegis of the National Political Consultative Group (North), saw a brief moment of chaos after former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, recognised a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State.

The move was met with stiff resistance from other Jigawa delegates who stormed the podium, physically preventing the delegate from addressing the gathering.

The protesting delegates insisted that the individual did not represent the consensus of stakeholders from their state.

Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and private security, swiftly intervened to de-escalate the situation and secure key political figures in attendance.

Calm was eventually restored following interventions by prominent leaders at the event. Subsequently, Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, along with another delegate, was selected to speak for the state.

The meeting is part of an ongoing effort to forge a broad-based political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Other notable figures, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, were also present at the gathering.

This disruption underscores the deep-seated issues of internal consensus and representation within opposition blocs as they strategise for a united front in future political contests.

Efforts to reach representatives of the National Political Consultative Group for official comments proved unsuccessful at press time.
