The Founder of Jigin-Mbi Royal Foundation, Dr. Emanuel Kalejaiye, Oloye Asoju Oba Iraye-Remo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a revered Yoruba leader and Chairman of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere.
Pa Adebanjo, 96, who was a distinguished lawyer, politician, and devoted follower of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, passed away peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos on Friday.
In a heartfelt statement issued on Friday, Dr. Kalejaiye, who resides in Poland, described Pa Adebanjo’s death as a monumental loss to the Yoruba people and the nation at large.
The philanthropist and royal figure lamented that although Pa Adebanjo lived a full and impactful life, his passing during such a critical time for Nigeria left the country without a wise elder-statesman whose counsel would have been invaluable.
“I am saddened by the demise of this great lawyer, politician, advocate of true federalism, and foremost Yoruba leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo,” Dr. Kalejaiye remarked.
“Though Baba lived to the remarkable age of 96, we would have loved to have him with us much longer, given his pedigree, integrity, and unwavering commitment to an egalitarian, just, and prosperous Nigeria.”
He also noted that the loss of Pa Adebanjo is particularly painful as Nigeria is currently in need of wise guidance from elder statesmen like him to help navigate its many challenges.
Dr. Kalejaiye took comfort in the fact that Pa Adebanjo’s legacy would endure through his steadfast dedication to democratic principles of justice, equity, fairness, and good governance.
He offered his deepest condolences to Pa Adebanjo’s family, both in Nigeria and abroad, as well as to the people and government of Ogun State, where the late nationalist hailed from.
“May his soul rest in peace,” Dr. Kalejaiye concluded.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a proud son of Isanya Ogbo in Ijebu, Ogun State, will be remembered for his tireless service to the Yoruba people and his steadfast belief in a better Nigeria.
