The Amalgamation of Muslim Rights Concern has called for a balanced and inclusive approach to reporting and addressing the security situation in Jos, urging authorities to ensure justice for all victims irrespective of religious or ethnic identity.
In a statement issued on Monday, the group drew attention to the recent wave of violence in Angwa Rukuba, where several lives were lost, including a corps member identified as Haruna, who was reportedly killed on the eve of his passing-out parade.
AMURIC said the incident underscores the need for careful handling of information and heightened responsibility among stakeholders, particularly in conflict-prone areas.
The organisation expressed concern over what it described as selective narratives surrounding the crisis in Plateau State, warning that presenting the violence as affecting only a particular group risks deepening divisions.
It noted that both Muslims and Christians have suffered casualties in various incidents over time, stressing that a one-sided portrayal could undermine ongoing peace-building efforts.
According to the group, public commentary that generalises or stigmatises entire communities should be avoided, as such statements may aggravate tensions and complicate security challenges.
AMURIC maintained that Nigeria’s security issues are multifaceted and require objective analysis rather than narrow interpretations based on religion or ethnicity.
The organisation also highlighted unresolved cases involving attacks on travellers, traders, and worshippers, calling for comprehensive investigations to ensure accountability.
It urged security agencies to conduct professional and impartial probes into all reported incidents, while advising government at all levels to prioritise fairness, inclusiveness, and protection of citizens.
The group further appealed to religious leaders, community actors, and the media to promote accurate information and exercise restraint in their engagements.
AMURIC emphasised the importance of resisting misinformation and narratives capable of creating distrust among communities, noting that national cohesion depends on justice, equity, and mutual respect.
It also called for sustained dialogue among stakeholders as part of efforts to achieve lasting peace in Plateau State and across the country.
