Journalist  Raises Alarm Over  Threats To Life, Petitions Police

Jamiu Folarin, a journalist and researcher, has petitioned  the Divisional Police Officer at Sabo/Ilupeju Police Station in Abeokuta, Ogun State, concerning threats to his life and the deliberate damage to his property.

In a detailed letter addressed to the DPO, Folarin outlined a series of alarming events that have unfolded since his involvement in investigative journalism.

He said the  events began after he aired a radio programme on Rockcity 101.9 F.M exposing the criminal activities of land grabbers in Ogun State and conducted in-depth investigations into corruption surrounding federal government projects in the state.

Folarin, who  owned two plots of land through the Crescent University Abeokuta Cooperative Society (CRESCOOPS) for over two years, described how tranquility turned to turmoil in recent weeks.

He reported receiving intimidating phone calls, being subjected to surveillance by unknown individuals, and experiencing the vandalism of his property.

The journalist disclosed that the four corner pieces marking his land in Olaparun village, near Yewa College of Education in Rounda, Abeokuta, were destroyed, and new pieces bearing different names were erected in their place.

Folarin highlighted the urgency of the situation, connecting the threats to his life, trespassing, and property damage as attempts to obstruct his investigative efforts.

Seeking swift action, Folarin appealed to the authorities for a thorough investigation into the threats and property damage, emphasizing the need for his protection due to the sensitive nature of his work.

Supporting his petition with evidence including documents and phone numbers linked to the replacement corner pieces, Folarin said he  awaits a response from the Divisional Police Officer.

Meanwhile, amidst police interrogation at Sabo Police Station on March 23, 2024, one of the suspects, Lukman Kehinde Kudaisi, reportedly issued further threats against Folarin, expressing intent to retaliate for the journalist’s petition.

Despite concerns about impartiality raised during the investigation process, Folarin commended the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Mustapha Opawuyi, for his directive to conduct a thorough investigation.

Subsequent visits to the alleged crime scene and interviews with involved parties were conducted, with statements obtained and instructions given for further proceedings
