A joyous celebration at the Okela Police Station in Ado Ekiti turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Thursday, January 2, as a young woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, was fatally struck by an accidental discharge from a policeman’s firearm.
The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly fired the shots in excitement after receiving news of his promotion.
The stray bullets hit Adekalu, a mother of one, resulting in fatal injuries. Confusion surrounds the exact circumstances of the incident.
Some accounts suggest the victim was standing in front of a salon opposite the police station when she was hit, while others claim she was at the station to visit her detained husband.
Eyewitnesses said the victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident, with Assistant Inspector General of Police Adewale Adeniran stating that the officer responsible has been disarmed and placed in custody pending further investigation.
The tragedy has sparked outrage among residents and raised concerns about firearm safety protocols within the police force.
