The Joint Security Task Force (JTF) in Imo State has uncovered shallow graves allegedly used by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to bury their victims.
The operation, led by Brigadier General U.I. Lawal, commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Obinze, uncovered the graves in Aku community, Okigwe Local Government Area.
The graves were reportedly located at the residence of an ESN leader, identified by his alias ‘Gentle,’ who had been on the security watchlist for a long time.
Although the exact number of graves discovered was not disclosed, the development marks a significant breakthrough in the JTF’s efforts to combat violent activities linked to the ESN in the state.
In a statement on Wednesday, Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed that police operatives were part of the team involved in the operation.
He said the raid had dismantled a major criminal base allegedly used by the ESN to launch attacks on residents and security personnel.
“The operation has successfully dismantled a significant base used by the criminal group in launching violent attacks on innocent citizens and security personnel,” the statement read.
“This breakthrough has led to the arrest of key suspects and has significantly improved security in the state.”
The visit to the site of the operation included top security officials, such as the commander of the naval base in Oguta, the director of the Department of State Services (DSS), the state commissioner for homeland security, and the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on security affairs, Brig. Gen. Joseph Ogbonna (retd.).
Brig. Gen. Ogbonna urged the residents of Aku to return to their community and cooperate with security agencies.
He assured them of the government’s commitment to providing necessary logistics to ensure their safety.
The JTF reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and safety across the state.
