Conjoined twins, Hassana and Husaina, have returned to Kano after a historic separation surgery in Saudi Arabia, bringing tears of joy and relief to their family and the people of the state.
The twins, who were born joined at the lower abdomen, pelvis and spine, arrived at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Thursday evening, where they were warmly received by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, top government officials, and a Saudi delegation.
The separation surgery was carried out at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital, Riyadh, under the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
A team of 38 medical experts — including pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, urologists, anaesthesiologists, and plastic surgeons — conducted the operation in nine stages lasting 14 hours, making it one of the most complex cases in the history of Saudi Arabia’s Siamese Twins Separation Programme.
“This is not just a medical success but a humanitarian one,” Governor Yusuf said while welcoming the girls and their parents.
“We are grateful to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this life-changing intervention. Kano State will take full responsibility for their welfare, education, and overall development.”
The Consul General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Khalil Ahmed Al-Admawi, who led the Saudi delegation, described the operation as a reflection of his country’s commitment to global humanitarian work.
“This demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s dedication to providing medical aid beyond its borders. We are proud of our partnership with Nigeria,” he said.
Head of the surgical team, Dr Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, described the operation as one of the most challenging in their 35 years of experience.
“But its success gives hope to many families across the world who are facing similar conditions,” he added.
Since its inception, the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Programme has successfully separated 65 sets of conjoined twins from 25 countries, making it a global leader in humanitarian medical intervention.
After their arrival, Hassana and Husaina were immediately transferred to a medical facility in Kano for further observation and post-surgery care.
